David A. Robertson- Art is Story, and stories save lives… “Why not just hang on one more day?”
I’ve been living with mental health struggles since I was a young man. At first, they were manageable; I didn’t think much of them — these little monsters — until they took over my life in 2010 when I had a nervous breakdown. There were days, during those awful months, when I didn’t think I could get out of bed, let alone cross the hallway to the bathroom. I spent six months with my mind and my nerves in chaos, and most of the days, not only did I not think I could make it another day, but I wouldn’t have wished for it. It took a while before I was able to see a psychiatrist, but when I did, my healing journey started. And the most powerful action in learning how to live with my mental health struggles was group therapy. Many people, myself included, are learning to share their stories through art. That’s one of the things that makes this exhibition so important. Art is Story, and stories save lives. I know this as an incontrovertible fact
